Magazine Price:
The magazine will be sold at a price of £3.00 -I have chosen this price because it will be issued monthly and will have a large content of lots of different goings on in the music industry.
Most music magazines are a similar price if not more, because it is quite a reasonable price more people are likely to buy it because it is cheaper than others, as well as it being full of what my target audience love, people will be willing to pay that price for what they get.

Target Audience:
DEMOGRAPHICS: Audiences can be classified into groups using quantitave data. E.g age/gender
Target Audience Age: 15-24 (mainly rock music fans)
Gender: Both male and female
S.E.G: Students - Group E: Casual Labourers/Unemployed/Pensioners/Students
PSYCHOGRAPHICS: There are different sections in society and different people who will read you magazine.
Target Group: Groups who are both INNER and OUTER DIRECTED
INNER-DIRECTED: I-am-me, experientals, societally conscious (people who believe they are right, don’t care about stuff –bungee jumpers/life experiencers/interested in the world)
OUTER-DIRECTED: belongers, emulators and achievers (want to know everything, want to be in ‘the loop’, copy cats, people who want credit and status)
I have chosen this target because it is the catagory where most music fans fit in, and my magazine is mainly for the people that enjoy this genre of music.

LIIAR Analysis of 3rd Existing Magazine:
Above the masthead there is a skyline saying what else is in the magazine. There is also a 'splash' saying about a free poster inside which draws the reader in because they are getting more for their money.
The masthead is plain and simple, yet is so effective because it grabs your attention straight away. The big black text is a great contrast with the grey background and really stands out.
Even though the image is covering part of the masthead, it doesn't matter because straight away you know which magazine it is, because it is popular and is also recognisable because of the colour scheme and style.
Going back to the image; I think this is a great main image because Taylor looks great which draws you in. Not only does it fit in with the theme of the magazine, but it also shows Taylor's own style. As she brands her style as looking like 'a high class hooker' -what she is wearing on the photograph could be considered as that sort of look.
The positioning of the image works well with the positioning of the text around it and is a great contrast to the red graphics and text.
On the contents the colour scheme is carried on, as well as the image of Taylor (again she is representing her style but in a different outfit.) The text/style is the same throughout the magazine which makes it look very professional.
The sub-headings allowing people to see what's inside also grab people’s attention because they sound interesting and it makes the audience want to read it.
This magazine is distributed so that the audience can gain more information about what's going on in the music industry, and what's new, eg: artists/music style/gigs etc...
The purpose is to expand peoples knowledge and so they are able to know more. The institute does this so the audience can feel involved and are shown that they are important in making the world of music go round!
The message this magazine is trying to send out is that people can have their own style and they too can make it in the music industry themselves if they want to. -they do this by interviewing artists to see how they have got famous and its an insight on 'how to make it' (most magazines do this.)
It makes the magazines look good and create a good impression also.
The target audience are that same for all the existing magazines.
I think that because of the images/colour scheme/house style it does attract the target audience however, also looks quite sophisticated, so could also attract some people from outside of the target audience.

The institution is REVOLVER magazine.
The magazine is supposed to 'scoop' info of whats going on in the music world amogst other things, which is shown by their headlines. They try to sound more informed than other magazines and as if they have more to offer so people are more likely to by their mag rather than any others.
This magazine is representing different artista and in this particular issue, who are the 'hottest' artists at the moment and The Pretty Reckless.
By showing Taylor Momsen on the front (lead singer of The Pretty Reckless) it shows that it is going to tell you about them and represent them in the magazine.
LIIAR Analysis of 1st Existing Magazine:
The masthead is bold and broad so that it grabs peoples attention and straight away what the magazine is called. -It goes across the whole of the magazine and above it there is a skyline saying what other bands are also inside the magazine.
The big bold white writing is a great contrast against the green background and even billy joe and the other members of greenday covering part of the masthead, it still works well because you are able to read it and you already know what magazine it is.
All members of the band are making eye contact with the camera which makes it look like he is looking at the reader. This grabs your attention which shows the image is good.
You can see that the images of the band have been cut out of the original image and placed on the green background with the red surrounding each band member.
The shade of red surrounding the band match the graphic behind the sub-heading about the band's album.
The slogan is situated underneath the masthead at the top of the magazine. It is ‘new music first’ this tells you in itself what the magazine is about
The thumbnails also grab people’s attention so that the audience know what stories will be inside. This makes you want to read the magazine more because the stories sound good!
The barcode is situated in the bottom right hand corner which shows that it is professional and are released regularly. Because the barcode is white, and again on a green background, it allows it to stand out so you are able to see the small detail; ie. issue number/price, which is still important.
All styles of the text; Masthead, Slogan, Subheadings/Titles etc… are the same throughout the magazine, so the house style is consistent. The colour scheme is carried on onto the contents and the double page spread, the theme of green also relates to greenday and represents the band as well as the magazine because it is their signature colour.
The style of images are also consistent throughout the magazine, one of the images is even used twice; once on the contents and in the double page spread. Quite a lot of magazines do this, almost like it is a preview to the interview/article.
Other images have also been included on the contents to let the reader see what else is in the magazine. The images act as more information about what is in the articles before actually reading them.
The graphology used on the contents page is fairly moderate as some of the images have been added in and there are graphics behind them, which is another theme that has been carried on from the front cover, where greenday have red behind them. -This is also used with the text, especially on the front cover and it has also been included on the double page spread with 'GREENDAY' in the corner. This technique works well whenever it is used because it draws in attention and you cant hel but notice it and read the text because it is almost as if it is highlighted.
Rock sound dont have thier own logo however, it could be considered that the masthead is the logo because whenever you see it, you know its the name of a magazine and you know what it is about.
The magazine champions rock music and aims at giving underground acts the recognition they deserve without over commercializing their work or missing out on the big names in rock music.
Rock Sound Magazine promises the best of the rock world, going over all genres of rock music and covering as many bands, albums and live shows as they can so you’ll always know where to spend your money and what’s going to be the next big thing for you. It also follows all of the big names so you’ll never miss the date of your favourite artist’s next tour!
-because of this the target audience for this magazine are rock music lovers, that like to know what's going on in the music industry. You can tell this from the masthead as it is called 'rock sound' and also from the band on the front. Everyone, even people that don't listen to rock music, know that greenday are a punk rock band, so as soon as you see that image, you know who will read it.
This will also represent the music industry while allowing people to know more about rock music.
The magazine however does not only represent the brand and music industry, but also the artists features throughout the magazine. In particular with this magazine, they have focussed on greenday and by doing this they are representing them and allowing the reader to know more about them. -A look into the lives of rockstars.

Choice of Music Genre:
I have chosen to make my music magazine a 'rock' themed magazine and will show new and talented artists in the industry that perform and write music in the style. -I have chosen this genre because it is one of the many styles of music that I like to listen to in my spare time. As well as that my main model that I would like to use has that look about her. The genre of rock also relates to the name of the magazine.
You use amps to make music instruments louder, e.g. an electric guitar which is used in rock music and rock music is also very loud too.
Examples of Existing Artists:
You use amps to make music instruments louder, e.g. an electric guitar which is used in rock music and rock music is also very loud too.
Examples of Existing Artists:
30 Seconds To Mars;
With songs like 'Closer To The Edge' and 'Kings and Queens'
they are definately rockstars with many followers
Debbie Harry (the lead singer of Blondie);
One of the ledgendary artists of the 70's, 80's and even 90's
Freddie Mercury;
The lead singer of the unforgettable rock band Queen.
He could have created this genre of music with the amount of talent he had.
GreenDay;
Records like 'American Idiot' pleases rock fans everywhere.
Iggy Pop;
The outrages rock star that gave all rock stars the 'bad ass' rep they have today...
Pat Benatar;
Staying strong through heart ache and many ups and downs she created music
that won't be forgotten.
Taylor Momsen (lead singer of The Pretty Reckless);
The most modern of all the ones listed however still creating great rock music, thanks to her inspiration from some of the rock artists listed above. With people like Freddie Mercury inspiring her to succeed and her mother who is Debbie Harry herself, she really was born to rock.

LIIAR Analysis of my College Magazine:
LANGUAGE:
Conventions: The slogan is situated underneath the masthead at the top of the magazine. It is ‘Learn about Wyke College…’ this tells you in itself what the magazine is about as well as rhyming with the masthead/title: ‘Wyke Knowledge’. This is the anchorage I have used on the front cover to draw in people attention more.
The masthead is bold and broad so that it grabs people attention and straight away they know what that particular magazine is called.
The titles of the stories also grab people’s attention so that the audience know what stories will be inside and hopefully make them want to read the magazine more because they think that the stories sound good!
-All styles of the text; Masthead, Slogan, Subheadings/Titles etc… Have the same house style throughout the magazine, this means I have used a consistent amount of two or three main colours and one or two fonts throughout the entire publication to establish brand identity and so that it looks more professional.
This means I have used a consistent amount of two or three main colours and one or two fonts throughout the entire publication to establish brand identity.
INSTITUTION:
This magazine is for the college to distribute so that more people can learn and know more about the college and what it has to offer.
IDEOLOGY:
The message it is trying to send out is that it isn’t a boring college and there is a lot going on and it has a lot to offer students.
The purpose of this magazine is so that more students become aware of what is happening in their college and how their fellow college students are doing as well.
It should represent the college in a good and positive light.
AUDIENCE:
Target Audience:
The specific group of people towards whom this magazine is directed is 15-24 (mainly college students) which are in both INNER and OUTER DIRECTED groups.
I think that because of the images I have used and colour scheme/house style I decided on attracts the students and looks more like a college magazine then a sophisticated magazine such as the journal which is obviously directed to older people, not so much students.
REPRESENTATION:
It represents the students at Wyke College and how if they work hard at what they want they can succeed! It doesn’t represent teens in a negative way it represents them in a very positive one. -It doesn’t stereotype teens/students as being reckless or anti-social like television might.
It also represents the college in a good light because it shows that it is dedicated to its students and is proud of them when they achieve something, this is shown because they write about it in the magazine so everyone can see how well they are doing.

Does it match the house style that is used on the front cover?
Everyone thought that the contents page matched the house style which is good because it means that the colour scheme is consistent throughout the magazine. This also makes the magazine look more attractive and professional as it is how all of the magazines such as 'OK' or 'New!' look.

100% decided that the pictures went well with the stories and also made the contents page look more interesting instead of it just being lots of writing. It looks more attractive because of the images that have been put on too.
Is the text and information clear?
Just like the front cover the writing is clear on the contents page also.

Only 80% of people asked said yes to whether they would read my magazine and 20% said they wouldn't, however the 20% that did answer no were male, which could mean two things: 1) Girls are more likely to read magazines than Boys OR 2) The magazine looks more like a Girls magazine rather than Boys.

How I would promote my magazine and the launch of it:
To promote my magazine on the internet I will use viral marketing campaigns. For example, I could have an advert/thumbnail/link on the Facebook website so that when people log on they can see when the launch of the magazine is and if they click on the link they could find out more information about it. –This would work well because Facebook is one of the main forms of social networking meaning if the advert/thumbnail/link were to be on there it would probably get noticed more. And when they click on the advert/thumbnail/link it would take them to the website where information about the magazine is given.
The website would only have sections of the stories in the magazine; whereas the main magazine that you buy will have all of them. This should encourage people to buy the magazine because it will make them want to read the full story, so they will go and buy it. Using the internet in this way would be a huge benefit because it would promote the magazine as well as showing what it has to offer and persuading them to buy the magazine.
Then depending on the interest in the magazine an Ipod app could be made where you pay £1 monthly or possibly less and the magazine is automatically downloaded when it is released monthly.

Final Front Cover:

I have chosen this as my final design of the front cover because it is the one that the audience preferred out of all 5 and I think it looks good. I have made the text less purple because a few people mentioned it was too purple or looked a bit girly. -There is still purple on the cover as it is part of the colour scheme however I also added the whit border the the hasthead to make it look less girly and more multi sex. I have kept the main image the same as the feedback was very positive about the image.
Everything that was necessary has been included, for example the price, barcode, issue number and information about what is inside.
My personal opinion on this magazine cover is that it is very eyecatching because of the colours and images. I think that the stories are also attention grabbing and overall everything works well together.

Draft Num5 - Before and After (with annotations):
Magazine Draft Before:
This magazine is plain, again, like the other drafts created, the text needs to be bolder, bigger, more readable and attention grabbing! There is also no price, issue number or barcode, so these need to be added in too.
Magazine Draft After:
This magazine is plain, again, like the other drafts created, the text needs to be bolder, bigger, more readable and attention grabbing! There is also no price, issue number or barcode, so these need to be added in too.
Magazine Draft After:
I added the price, issue number and barcode first because these are essential. I then made the text larger, added the brest cancer bow for a little decor and changed the text so it was more readable!
Draft Num4 - Before and After (with annotations):
Magazine Draft Before:
This is quite plain and looks like a traditional college magazine. The text is plain and boring and the title needs to be bigger, bolder and more noticeable. The text saying 'What Wyke has to offer to students like you!' is also lost in the picture and needs to stand out more.
Magazine Draft After:
Draft Num3 - Before and After (with annotations):
Magazine Draft Before:
The magazine looks as if it is missing something because it is quite bare around the top because there is not pictures or text there. Because of this it looks quite plain and boring. The masthead is eye catching however the front cover as a whole is not. To improve this i will either add pictures or text, or maybe both.
Magazine Draft After:

The masthead is eye catching however the front cover as a whole is not. To improve this i will either add pictures or text, or maybe both.
Magazine Draft After:
I added some eye catching text to the front cover informing people of what is inside the magazine. This way people will know what to expect and may want to read the magazine more cause they know what it offers. This also makes the front cover look better because it makes it look less boring.
Draft Num2 - Before and After (with annotations):
Positioning of Text: The sub-heading for the article is at the top and then the information about it is at the bottom. they should be together, so I will move them so the they look better and more like a professional college magazine. also where the white text is situated it is quite hard to read so it may need moving or outlining to make it readable.
Magazine Draft After:
I have moved the white text slightly so that it is readable and i moved the 'Daniel & Connor' text so that it looks better and more professional.
-This magazine is quite plain however I think it works quite well because it shows the main story and is eye catching, and all the other information and stories can be put on the ontents page.

Draft Num1 - Before and After (with annotations):
Magazine Draft Before:
Masthead: this needs more emphasis so that it grabs your attention more. At the moment it is quite plain, bland and boring. -It needs to be more eye catching! I will try and make it bigger and bolder in order to achieve this.
Colour of the Text: The purple is hard to read and make out, you need to be able to read it easily. I will look at different colours of text to see if I like any, or I might just outline the purple writing with black so that you can read it and it still has the same colour scheme.
Amount of Text: There is too much text about Daniel and Connor making it through to the final stage of Xfactor, this is more appropriate for the contents page so I will take this off the front page and place it on the contents instead.
Pictures: The main image works well however the images on top dont seem to be part of the maazine as they have just been placed on top of the main image. Instead of just 'placing' them on there I will either give them a border, making them smaller, I could position them together and make them look as if the are also a main part of the magazine.
Magazine Draft After:
Masthead: I have outlined the title with purple to make it stand out more and made the writing bigger, as well as changing the text to make it more bold.
Colour of the Text: The purple was hard to read so I decided to outline the purple text in black so that it stood out more and was readable. this worked well because the colour sheme could stay the same.
Amount of Text: I got rid of th text about Daniel and Connor making it through to the final stage of Xfactor, and instead will use it on the contents page as suggested above.
Pictures: I made both images smaller and placed one on top of the other so they looked like more of a unit and moved them to the bottom left hand corner and placed information about a party above it so that there wasnt an empty space.

Planning and Development of the Front Cover:
Images that I may use:
I have chosen Image 1 to be my main image because I think it attracts attention because she is a pretty girl on the front cover and it goes with my main story about Britain’s Next Top Model. It also has good lighting; it is a clear bright picture so it should work well on the front. I chose Image 1 instead of Image 2 because I think it looks better with her looking at the camera, as a pose to her looking down.
This is a good picture because the building in the back is bright and eye catching and Emily is smiling so it looks like she is enjoying college life!
I like this image because it shows that people with their own style come to Wyke College and feel comfortable in the environment and aren’t afraid to be their own person.
I think I will use this image because it shows the equipment Wyke has and could also represent different stories e.g. New voice of Wyke, Music Tech student, new recording artist, own record label etc…
Images I dont think I will use:
I won’t be using this picture because it is quite dark, the lighting isn’t great and it is a shot of the knees up when it should be a headshot.
I dont think I will use this because it is blurry and his face looks a bit odd.
I cant use this one because a boy is 'mooning' in the background.
I dont think I will use this because it is an odd colour and the lighting isnt very good, she is also on her phone which may not give the best impression, however if it were to advertise an app or something similar, it could work well if the image was better.
Other images I have taken but will not be using because I dont think they look very good or are not very eye catching:

Price / how often published etc and why?
The magazine will be published every month to allow students to see what has happened in the past month, what may have effected the college in positive ways and help students become more aware of what the college may have to offer to them if they dont know already.
It will only be £1.00 because some students may not have a lot of money and therefore don’t want to be spending a lot of money on a magazine.

Analysis of Magazines
East Riding College Front Cover and Contents;
L – The masthead is the most dominant piece of text on the front page, however is quite plain, boring, not very eye catching or memorable. I don’t think it makes you want to read it because it looks like it won’t have much fun stuff to read about. The contents is a little bit better because it is more brightly coloured and makes you want to read it a bit more because it is eye catching and the images draw your attention in too.
The main image is the most eye catching thing on the front of the magazine – it takes up most of the page so you are more drawn to it. Again it isn’t a very memorable or exciting image, but it does give you knowledge of what will be spoken about because it has a little description in the top right hand corner. The images in the contents give you a bit of a hint as to what could be in the magazine, however it would have been better if there were little descriptions next to them so that it provided more information.
The colour scheme is very simple too. The colours mainly used are black and white, this makes the college magazine look more sophisticated and like the target audience may be older than college students because it isn’t that bright or colourful, and most teens like to read something that looks interesting and this magazine doesn’t have these features. It only starts to look slightly interesting when you see the contents page because of the bright green colour; however as the contents isn’t the first thing that you see on a magazine it doesn’t really help when promoting the mag.
There is no anchorage because there is no slogan or anything extra that makes you drawn to this magazine it is really boring. The only thing that is that it is free and if people notice that, then more people may read it.
I - It shows that East Riding College created the magazine and promotes it and the information is included on the front so you can see what the mag is going to tell you about inside.
I - The college produce this magazine to let people know what is happening with the college and make people more aware of what they have to offer. By showing the image of a media trip it shows that there is information inside about a trip that some other students may be interested in.
A – The target audience is the students of East Riding College or to the parents possibly.
R – This magazine represents the college, but makes it seem boring and not very interesting as it is plain and bland.
L – Masthead is short, memorable, presented as a large, dominant icon which is noticed.
- The main image is also the background. It isn’t a main image however there is a smaller image in the bottom left hand corner which hints to what could be inside. The background/pictures are clearly seen and are eye catching because it isn’t just one whole boring colour it is bright blue and white.
- The blue and white are a contrast next to one another but work well because you notice the mag. However when you get to the contents page the colour scheme is not consistent as it adds three extra colours into it and it isn’t mainly blue and white, there is now pink, orange and green too. This makes the magazine look like there is a lot more going on than there actually is and some people may not like this because it is too ‘busy’ however at the bottom of the page the house style is still clearly there as it is the same as the front cover.
- Images are mainly on the contents page. This is good because it can act as hints as to what is in the magazine but it would have been better if descriptions were also included so that you knew a bit more information.
-It doesn’t say a price or have a bar code.
- Contact information is shown on the front cover and contents.
- There isn’t any information about the main article because there is no main image on the front cover to say what it could be.
I – This magazine is produced and written by Grimsby College to allow people to know things about the college they may not have known before and tell them what is going on inside the college.
I - The college produce this magazine to let people know what is happening with the college and make people more aware of what they have to offer.
A – Students of the college and people interested in the college (mainly teens).
R - This magazine represents the college, and would like to portray themselves positively.
South Hunsley School and 6th Form College Magazine Front Cover; (no contents)
L – The masthead is presented as a large, dominant icon which you notice straight away, it also includes the logo so you know which college it represents.
It states that it is the specialism issue so you know what you are going to be reading about.
- The main image shows somebody working hard, so it allows you to see that South Hunsley expects their pupils to work hard and that they are all about education.
- A fresh looking colour scheme with clear house-style of two or three main colours –white, blue and black.
- Sponsors are shown on the bottom of the front page so that the audience know who helps Hunsley and is involved with them.
-It states it is the ‘way ahead’ implying that they are the best way to get ahead in life.
- There is no price or barcode on the front cover.
- The main image implies that inside the magazine it will be about what you can learn at Hunsley and what they have to offer.
I – South Hunsley have produced this magazine to draw attention to themselves in a positive away and promote the 6th form college and school as a whole.
I - Hunsley have made this to allow people to see what takes place in their school/college and send out the message that they are one of the best colleges in the area.
A - This magazine is aimed at parents of pupils, people in the area, people looking for a college or school etc.
R – They want this to promote themselves positively and accurately with this magazine and I think that this magazine would appeal to parents however I am unsure about students because it isn’t that brightly coloured however does look professional and neat.
